Thallus in rosettes or spreading, to 10 cm wide. Lobes to 2 mm wide, irregularly dichotomously branched, often strongly contiguous at margins, ±congested-imbricate centrally, with smooth outer lobes, glossy, centrally wrinkled-scrobiculate or corrugate, matt, olive-green, brown or blackened, sometimes green-grey centrally, often grey- or black-blotched; margins rounded or shallowly incised; apices chestnut-brown; cavity black. Perforations to 1 mm long, in median line of lobes, level with lobe surface or margin ±depressed. Lower surface black, shining, glabrous, scrobiculate, brownish at margins. Apothecia central, 0.5–2.5 mm wide, rounded; disc concave to ±flat, shining, red-brown to dark brown; exciple smooth, shining, ±ridged, thick, becoming laceratecrenulate, shining, concolorous with thallus. Ascospores 2 per ascus, ovoid, smooth, 44–52 × 17–20 µm; wall 3 µm thick. Pycnidia scarce to clustered. Conidia 4–7 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: stictic, constictic, norstictic and menegazziaic acids and accessory compounds; medulla K+ orange, C-, KC+ orange, P+ orange. | ||
Occurs on alpine and subalpine rocks and sometimes soil in N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.; also in New Zealand. | ||
